The Official Indiana State Quarters

Indiana State Motto: The crossroads of America
Front of the US quarter dollar coin   Indiana State Quarter

The Indiana state quarter was created in 2002 and features a 19th-century steam locomotive on the front side. The locomotive is a reference to the historic role of rail transportation in the state's development. The back of the quarter features the state's outline with the state motto "Crossroads of America" inscribed above it. The torch from the state seal is also featured on the back of the quarter, representing liberty and enlightenment. The 19 stars around the torch represent Indiana as the 19th state to join the union. The outer ring of the design displays the words "Indiana 1816", commemorating the state's entrance into the Union.

The second Indiana State Quarter

The Indiana National Park Quarter, issued in 2016 as part of the United States Mint's America the Beautiful Quarters Program, honors Indiana Dunes National Park. The reverse design of the coin features a view of the park's 15-mile long sandy beach, which stretches along Lake Michigan's southern shoreline. The design includes a piping plover, a federally protected shorebird, as it runs along the beach's edge. The coin also includes a historic sand dune, an oak tree, and a red cedar tree. Inscriptions are "INDIANA DUNES", "INDIANA", "2016", and "E PLURIBUS UNUM".

The America the Beautiful Quarters Program began in 2010 to commemorate a national park or other national site in each state, the District of Columbia and the five U.S. territories. The program is scheduled to run through 2021. The coins' designs honor national parks, forests, monuments, and other sites of national importance. The program was authorized by the America's Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008.

The obverse of the Indiana National Park Quarter features the familiar 1932 portrait of George Washington, designed by John Flanagan. The inscriptions read "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "QUARTER DOLLAR", "LIBERTY", and "IN GOD WE TRUST".

The Indiana National Park Quarter is a symbol of Indiana's rich natural heritage and its commitment to preserving it for future generations. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting our nation's parks and public lands.
