Anderson County is a county located in the southeastern part of Kansas. It was established on August 25, 1855, and covers an area of 584 square miles. The county was named in honor of Joseph C. Anderson, a prominent statesman and speaker of the Kansas Territorial Legislature. Garnett, the county seat, was founded in the same year Anderson County was established.

The area was initially home to Native American tribes, notably the Osage Nation. When the United States government purchased the land as part of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, it became a site for Euro-American settlement. The development of the region was largely influenced by the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which opened the territory for settlement and led to the establishment of Anderson County.

During the Civil War, Anderson County was exposed to raiding parties from both Union and Confederate forces. It was also a hotbed of activity during the infamous Bleeding Kansas era, in which pro-slavery and abolitionist settlers clashed over whether the territory should permit slavery.

The county experienced significant population growth as a result of westward expansion in the late 1800s. Agriculture and railroad construction played a significant role in the county's economy during this period. This growth continued into the early 1900s; however, the county's population has since decreased over time.

One fun fact about Anderson County, Kansas is that the Garnett Country Club, located in the county seat, is home to Kansas' first 9-hole golf course. Established in 1902, it is one of the oldest courses in the state and offers a unique outdoor recreational opportunity for visitors and residents alike.
