Bourbon County, located in the great state of Kansas, was established on August 25, 1855, as one of the original thirty-six counties in Kansas Territory. It was initially created by the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 and named after the Bourbon dynasty of France, who supported the American Revolutionary War.

The first European settlers in the area were predominantly from the southern United States, and they introduced the practice of slaveholding into Kansas. That said, Bourbon County played a significant role in the "Bleeding Kansas" period (1854-1861), a series of violent confrontations between pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions in Kansas and neighboring Missouri.

Fort Scott, a significant city in Bourbon County, was established in 1842 to protect the settlers from Osage Native Americans in the region. The fort later became a significant player during the American Civil War, serving as a hub for Union troops and supplying various regiments.

Nowadays, Bourbon County is mainly an agricultural community with various attractions, such as the historic downtown Fort Scott and the Fort Scott National Historic Site. It is known for its beautiful countryside, rich history, and amazing local culture.

Fun fact: Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, famous for his fairy tales, once received a letter postmarked from Bourbon County in Kansas, which he described as "from the land of the swineherds, from a country where no roses bloom." However, Fort Scott -- in Bourbon County -- hosts an annual "Good Ol' Days" festival that celebrates the city's history with its beautiful, blooming roses.
