Brown County, located in the northeastern part of Kansas, was officially established on August 25, 1855, as one of the state's original 36 counties. It was named in honor of Albert Gallatin Brown, a U.S. Senator from Mississippi and a prominent pro-slavery advocate. The county covers an area of 572 square miles and has a population of around 10,000 residents.

Following the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854, Euro-American settlers began moving into the area. The region was previously inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Iowa, Kickapoo, Sac, and Fox tribes. The county seat, Hiawatha, was founded in 1857, and other towns such as Horton, Everest, and Fairview were established as the region continued to develop.

Throughout its history, Brown County has played a significant role in the rail and transportation industries, with the Central Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad and the St. Joseph and Grand Island Railroad providing vital links for trade and movement throughout the region.

Agriculture has also been a mainstay in the county's economy, with its fertile soil and rolling hills providing ideal conditions for successful farming. Major crops include corn, soybeans, wheat, and livestock such as cattle.
