Coffey County, located in the eastern region of Kansas, is known for its rich history and contributions to America's overall development. The area that would become Coffey County was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, primarily the Kansa and Osage people. The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 brought this region under the United States territory. Between 1840 and 1854, trails and trade routes were developed in this region, such as the Santa Fe Trail and the Oregon Trail, which passed through the southeastern part of Coffey County.

Coffey County was officially established in 1855, named in honor of A. M. Coffey, a prominent pro-slavery advocate. The county played a noteworthy role in the "Bleeding Kansas" period, a series of violent confrontations from 1854 to 1859, determining whether Kansas would be a free state or a slave state. Early settlers primarily built their livelihoods around agriculture, with crops such as wheat, corn, oats, and hay being the major produce in the area.

An interesting aspect of Coffey County's history is its role in the development of the railroad industry. In the late 19th century, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) Railroad built several lines through Coffey County, connecting it to other parts of Kansas and beyond.
