Greenwood County, located in the great state of Kansas, was established on February 26, 1862. It was named in honor of Alfred Burton Greenwood, who served as a U.S. Congressman for the Arkansas district from 1853 to 1857. The county has an area of approximately 1,153 square miles, with Eureka serving as its county seat.

In its early days, the area was primarily inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Osage Natives. White settlers began moving to the territory as part of the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which allowed American citizens to decide whether the territory should permit slavery. The first European American settlers came to the region in 1856, and the county experienced substantial growth in the 1860s and 1870s due to the expansion of the railways.

The economy of Greenwood County was primarily based on agriculture, with an emphasis on livestock and crop farming. Throughout its history, the county has experienced steady growth and development, with the establishment of schools, churches, and other essential institutions.

A fun fact about Greenwood County is that it was home to Texaco's largest inland refinery, which began operations in 1917 near Eureka. This refinery became a significant employer in the region before it was dismantled in the 1950s. The county is also known for its beautiful landscapes, such as Fall River State Park and the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, which offer a glimpse into the region's natural beauty and history.
