Leavenworth County is situated in northeastern Kansas and boasts a rich historical background. Established on August 25, 1855, during the Kansas territorial era, it was one of the first 36 original counties in the state. The county was named after Henry Leavenworth, a highly respected officer in the United States Army who founded Fort Leavenworth in 1827.

Fort Leavenworth served as an essential military base and played a significant role in America's westward expansion. It was a critical supply base and provided protection to settlers from potential conflicts with Native American tribes living in the area.

The city of Leavenworth, which happens to be the county seat, earned its place in history by becoming the first city incorporated in Kansas in 1854. In the 19th century, Leavenworth thrived as a center for trade and manufacturing due to its proximity to the Missouri River.

Leavenworth County played a part in the heated debates and conflicts leading up to the Civil War, as pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions struggled for control in the region. The county saw the emergence of the Free-State movement, asserting the desire for Kansas to enter the Union as a free state and not supporting the extension of slavery.

A fun fact about Leavenworth County is that it is home to the "Big Stranger Creek," a popular spot for fishing and an essential water source for some nearby towns. Additionally, the county boasts a few sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, like the Fort Leavenworth National Historic District, showcasing its rich cultural and historical heritage.
