Lyon County is located in the eastern part of Kansas, encompassing approximately 855 square miles. Established on August 25, 1855, and originally named Breckinridge County after a U.S. vice president, it later adopted the name Lyon County in 1861 in honor of Nathaniel Lyon, a Union General in the American Civil War. Emporia, the largest city in the county, serves as the county seat.

The history of Lyon County is deeply rooted in the American pioneer movement. When Kansas became a territory in 1854, various groups were vying for the region, including those who wished to establish it as a free or pro-slavery state. In 1856, a group of settlers from Lawrence, Kansas, founded the city of Emporia near the Kansas River. Emporia was settled largely by those who were against slavery, and it played a vital role in the development of the county.

The early economy of Lyon County was driven by agriculture and the railroad industry. In 1863, the Union Pacific Railroad was constructed from Lawrence through Emporia and into Junction City, bringing additional opportunities for growth and development.

Throughout the 20th century, Lyon County continued to evolve, with its economy diversifying into manufacturing, education, and healthcare. Today, the county remains a thriving area, preserving its rich historical heritage while adapting to modern times.

A fun fact about Lyon County is that Emporia has been recognized as the Founding City of Veterans Day. In 1953, the town began honoring all veterans on November 11 (originally known as Armistice Day), and their efforts to broaden the scope of the holiday led to the U.S. government officially designating November 11 as Veterans Day in 1954. Every year, Emporia hosts a celebration and parade to honor veterans, proudly embracing its role in the history of the national holiday.
