Osage County is located in the east-central region of Kansas and was officially organized on March 30th, 1859. The county was named after the Osage River, which was named for the Osage Native American tribe that had inhabited the region. Covering an area of 1,151 square miles, Osage County offers a unique blend of natural beauty and a rich historical background.
Before the arrival of European settlers, the area was mainly inhabited by the Kansa and Osage Native American tribes. The 1820s saw the onset of fur trading in the area, and in the 1830s and 1840s, the Santa Fe Trail ran through present-day Osage County, making it an important stopover for traders and settlers heading west. In the 1850s, during the Bleeding Kansas period, individuals began to settle the area, and it became a battleground over the issue of slavery. Osage County was officially established during Kansas' territorial period, and when Kansas achieved statehood in 1861, the county became an official political territory.
Agriculture and livestock rearing played a significant role in Osage County's growth and economic development during the 19th century. Today, the county still retains its agricultural foundation and small-town charm, with thriving farming communities and numerous historic sites that visitors can explore.
