Russell County, located in the great state of Kansas, was officially established on February 26, 1867. It was named in honor of Avra P. Russell, a captain in the Second Kansas Cavalry during the Civil War. The area's early settlers were mainly of German, English, and Bohemian descent, attracted by the prospects of fertile land and ample opportunities. The area steadily grew over the years, with agriculture and oil production serving as the primary drivers of the local economy.
One interesting historic landmark in Russell County is the Deines Cultural Center, originally built in 1879 as the Church of the Immaculate Conception. The church was built by German immigrants with local limestone and served as a spiritual center for Catholic settlers of the area. In later years, it was repurposed as a cultural center showcasing art and history exhibits.
