Smith County is located in the northern part of Kansas, United States. Established on February 26, 1867, it was named in honor of Major J. Nelson Smith, a Civil War hero from the 2nd Colorado Volunteer Infantry. The county has a rich history dating back to the early years of the American frontier.

In the 19th century, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Kanza, Arapaho, and Sioux. The first post office in Smith County was established in 1871, and the town of Smith Centre became the county seat in 1872.
