Stafford County is located in the southern-central region of the great state of Kansas. It was officially established on February 26, 1875, and originally named St. John County. The name was changed to Stafford in honor of Captain Lewis Stafford on June 5, 1885. Captain Stafford was a native Kansan who served in the Civil War and was tragically killed during the conflict.

The first permanent settlement in the county is believed to have been St. John, which was settled in 1875. The town, which would eventually become the county seat, was founded by the order of the Grand Duke Alexis of Russia, who visited the area on a buffalo hunting trip. The original settlers were primarily immigrants of Russian, German, and Swedish origin, who developed the land and engaged in agricultural work.

Stafford County, along with the surrounding area, is part of the vast Great Plains region of the United States. The county has a rich agricultural history with wheat, corn, sorghum, and hay being the main cultivated crops. The region is also known for its oil and gas production, which has played a significant role in the county's development and economy over the years.

One fun fact about Stafford County is that it houses the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, which spans over 22,000 acres and was established in 1955. This refuge is a significant migratory stop for various bird species, including the endangered whooping crane. Visitors can enjoy bird watching, hiking, and wildlife photography in this stunning refuge.

Overall, Stafford County offers a glimpse into the history of the Great Plains settlement and the evolving agricultural and industrial development of the region, all while providing a haven for wildlife enthusiasts.
