The Official Kansas State Quarters

Kansas State Motto: Per aspera ad astra
To the stars through difficulties

Front of the US quarter dollar coin   Kansas State Quarter

The Kansas state quarter was designed by artist Tom Slick and was issued in 2005. The design features a sunflower, the state flower, in the center of the quarter with the inscription "The Sunflower State". Around the sunflower are the words "Kansas" and "1861" to represent the year the state was admitted to the Union. The lower left side of the coin features a bison, which is the state animal, and the lower right side features a T-shaped symbol, which is meant to represent the Native American tribes of the state. The reverse of the quarter features a landscape of wheat and a soaring American bald eagle, which is meant to represent the agricultural and natural resources of the state.

The second Kansas State Quarter

The Kansas National Park quarter, part of the "America the Beautiful Quarters" program, was released on August 30, 2021. The reverse of the quarter features a bison walking on a prominent rise with a sunflower field in the foreground. The Sunflower State is known for its vast fields of bright yellow sunflowers, and the image on the quarter is intended to represent this tradition.

The bison featured on the quarter is a symbol of the Native American tribes that once roamed the Great Plains. The tribes hunted the bison for food and relied on them for many of their basic needs. The bison is also a symbol of the American West, representing a time before settlers arrived and changed the landscape forever.

The reverse of the quarter also features a silhouette of the tallest peak in Kansas, Mount Sunflower, as well as a view of the horizon from the peak. The horizon is a reminder of the endless opportunities that await those who venture into the unknown.

The obverse of the quarter features a portrait of George Washington, the first president of the United States, and was designed by John Flanagan in 1932. The words "Liberty," "In God We Trust," and "United States of America" are also inscribed on the obverse.

The "America the Beautiful Quarters" program is a series of circulating commemorative coins in the United States. The program began in 2010 and will run until 2021. The program honors national parks and other national sites in each state, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. Each quarter features a unique design that celebrates the history and culture of the featured site. The Kansas National Park quarter is the 33rd release in the series.
