One fun and verifiable fact about the history of Wichita, Kansas is that the city was once a major cowtown in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In fact, by 1870, it became the railhead for Texas cattle drives and was known as the "Cowtown of the West." At its peak, around 5 million head of cattle passed through Wichita annually. This rich history is celebrated in Wichita's Old Cowtown Museum, which is a 23-acre open-air living history museum featuring over 50 buildings and exhibits from the late 1860s to the early 1900s.
