The county was named after Major General Richard Butler, a distinguished officer in the American Revolutionary War who was later killed during the Battle of the Wabash. Morgantown, the county seat, was also founded in 1810 and was named in honor of General Daniel Morgan, a renowned figure in the Revolutionary War.
