Montgomery County is located in the eastern part of Kentucky and was formed on December 14, 1796, from the land that was originally part of Clark County. It was named in honor of General Richard Montgomery, an Irish-American Revolutionary War hero who played a significant role in the early stages of the American Revolution.

In the early years of its formation, Montgomery County became a center for agriculture, especially focused on hemp, tobacco, corn, and livestock. The city of Mount Sterling is the county seat and has been an essential commercial and cultural hub for the county since its establishment in 1792.

The area witnessed some action during the Civil War, as both Confederate and Union troops occupied the region. However, there were no significant battles fought in Montgomery County. Post the Civil War, the county continued to focus on agriculture, and with the introduction of railroads, it became more accessible, leading to increased trade and growth.

One fun fact about Montgomery County is that it hosts the annual "Court Day Festival," a tradition that has been celebrated for over 200 years. This event, which takes place in Mount Sterling during October, attracts thousands of visitors and vendors from all over the country. They come together to sell and exchange goods, enjoy food and entertainment, and experience the unique history of this region in the great state of Kentucky.
