A fun and verifiable fact about Bayou Cane, Louisiana is that it was originally called "Bayou Chien" which means "Dog Bayou" in French, but the name was later changed to Bayou Cane because of the abundance of sugar cane that was grown in the area. Today, Bayou Cane is still known for its rich sugarcane history and the annual Louisiana Cane Festival is held in nearby Jeanerette to celebrate the crop.
