A fun and verifiable fact about Metairie, Louisiana is that it houses one of the largest malls in the world - the Lakeside Shopping Center. It was opened in 1960 and spans across 1.5 million square feet, hosting over 120 retailers and restaurants.
As for a historical anecdote, during World War II, Metairie became a hub for naval operations. The region was strategically important because of the proximity to the Gulf of Mexico. The U.S. Navy established a number of camps and hospitals in the area to support their operations. One of the camps was Camp Leroy Johnson, which was established in 1942 and was used as a boot camp and training center for Navy personnel. It continued to serve the Navy until 1958, and after closing down, it was eventually transformed into the present-day center of the region's civil defense activities.
