.Acadia Parish is located in the great state of Louisiana, within the United States of America. Established on March 1, 1887, the parish was formed out of the southwestern portion of St. Landry Parish. Initially named after the former French colony of Acadia (present-day Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island in Canada), the region got its name because French-speaking Acadians were the first Europeans to settle there after being forcibly removed from Acadia by British authorities during the Great Expulsion in the 18th century.
The parish's largest city and the seat of the local government is Crowley, which was founded in 1887 by W.W. Duson and named after Pat Crowley, an Irish railroad man. Acadia Parish is part of the Acadiana region of Louisiana, which is heavily influenced by the Cajun culture. Historically, the economy of the region has been predominantly agricultural, with rice being the primary crop.
A fun fact about Acadia Parish is that it hosts the annual International Rice Festival, one of the oldest and largest agricultural festivals in Louisiana. The festival, which began in 1937, celebrates the role of rice in the economy and culture of the region.
