Saint Mary Parish, Louisiana
.Saint Mary Parish, located in the southern part of Louisiana, was established on March 25, 1811, as one of the original 19 parishes created by the territorial legislature. It covers an area of roughly 1,119 square miles and is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico to the south. The parish was named in honor of the Catholic church, St. Mary and the primary religions in the area are Roman Catholic and Southern Baptist.
The historical background of Saint Mary Parish dates back to the prehistoric era, as evidenced by the numerous Native American mounds found in the area, such as the Chitimacha tribe, who occupied the land beside the Charenton Bayou. The region was first explored by Europeans during the 16th and 17th centuries, with the Spanish and French laying claims to the land at different times.
In the early 1800s, Louisiana was acquired by the United States in the Louisiana Purchase. The area witnessed growth in agriculture, mainly focusing on sugar cane, and had a thriving trade along the Atchafalaya River, which played a vital role in transportation and commerce. During the antebellum period, Saint Mary Parish was home to several plantations due to its fertile soil and access to transportation routes. The economy was greatly impacted by the Civil War and resulted in the decline of plantation life; however, the parish recovered as it adapted to the needs of the evolving country.
A fun fact about Saint Mary Parish is that it is home to the oldest operating ferry service in Louisiana. The Morgan City- Berwick Ferry system, established in 1933, transports vehicles and pedestrians across the Berwick Bay and Atchafalaya River. This historic and still-operating ferry system is an icon of the parish and represents both the past and present of the region.
Today, Saint Mary Parish is known for its natural beauty, cultural heritage, and various industries such as agriculture, oil, and gas. Its unique blend of history and contemporary life makes it an exciting and diverse part of Louisiana.
