1. The town of Jackson was originally named Republicville, after the Republic of West Florida, a short-lived independent country that existed in the early 1800s.
2. The town was the site of the Battle of Jackson during the Civil War. It was fought on August 3, 1863, and resulted in a Confederate victory.
3. Jackson is home to the Centenary State Historic Site, which is the site of the former Centenary College of Louisiana. The college was founded in 1825 and is the oldest chartered liberal arts college west of the Mississippi River.
4. The town's courthouse was the site of the trial and conviction of Mark Essex in 1973. Essex was a former Marine who went on a shooting spree in New Orleans, killing nine people before being killed by police.
