One fun and verifiable fact about an historical event that took place around the city of Springfield, Massachusetts is that the first basketball game was played at Springfield College on December 21, 1891. Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physical education instructor, invented the game as a way to keep his students active during the winter months. The game was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets on opposite ends of the gymnasium. Today, basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world, and Springfield is known as the "Birthplace of Basketball."
