A fun and verifiable fact about Holyoke, Massachusetts is that it is considered the birthplace of volleyball. The sport was invented by William G. Morgan, a physical education instructor at the Holyoke YMCA in 1895. Morgan had originally named the game "mintonette" and it was designed as a less physical alternative to basketball, which had also been invented at the nearby Springfield YMCA in 1891. Today, Holyoke is home to the International Volleyball Hall of Fame, which celebrates the city's role in popularizing the sport.
