One fun and verifiable fact about the village of New Market, Maryland is that it was home to the famous New Market Rebels, a group of teenage boys who left their classrooms and joined the Confederate Army during the Civil War. On May 15, 1864, the boys fought in the Battle of New Market and helped the Confederacy achieve a victory. Today, the battlefield is preserved as New Market Battlefield State Historical Park, and there is a statue honoring the New Market Rebels.
