The Official Maine State Quarters

Maine State Motto: Dirigo: I direct
Front of the US quarter dollar coin   Maine State Quarter

The Maine state quarter was designed by Richard Masters and was issued in 2003. The design of the quarter features a reproduction of the state's coat of arms, which includes a farmer and a seaman representing Maine's agricultural and maritime heritage. The center of the coat of arms is a shield with a moose, a pine tree, and a star, representing Maine's natural resources. The shield is flanked by a white pine cone and tassel, and the motto "Dirigo", which means "I direct". In the background is a representation of the North Star, representing Maine's place as the northernmost state in the nation.

The second Maine State Quarter

The Maine National Park quarter was released in 2020 as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. The program was launched in 2010 by the United States Mint to honor 56 national parks and other national sites in each of the 50 states, five U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia. The Maine National Park quarter features the Popham Beach State Park, located in Phippsburg, Maine. This park is known for its long sandy beach, which is one of the few remaining undeveloped coastal areas in the state and a popular destination for beachgoers and recreational fishermen.

The obverse of the Maine National Park quarter features a portrait of George Washington, the first president of the United States. This portrait was originally sculpted by John Flanagan for the 1932 Washington quarter.

The reverse of the Maine National Park quarter features a representation of the Popham Beach State Park, including a view of the beach and the rocky shoreline. The design also includes a lighthouse and a sailboat, which are symbols of the Maine coast. Inscriptions on the reverse include "Maine," "Popham Beach," and "E Pluribus Unum."
