Maine was admitted into the United States on March 15th, 1820 where the state capitol today resides in Augusta.

The official motto of the state of Maine is "Dirigo," which is Latin for "I direct" or "I lead." This motto was adopted in 1820 as part of the state's seal, which also includes a pine tree and a farmer and a sailor, representing Maine's agricultural and maritime heritage. The motto is a reminder of the strength and resilience of the people of Maine, who have always been independent and self-reliant.
