Isabella County is located in the central region of Michigan, in the United States. Established in 1859, the county is named after Queen Isabella I of Castile, who, alongside King Ferdinand II of Aragon, sponsored Christopher Columbus's first voyage to the Americas.
The area was originally inhabited by the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Nation, with whom the Treaty of 1855 set aside land in what is now Isabella County as a reservation. The first European settlers arrived in the 1850s, and by 1860, the native population was outnumbered. Over the years, the county experienced growth primarily due to its agricultural production and the lumber industry.
The county seat is Mount Pleasant, which was founded in 1854 and is also the home of the Central Michigan University, established in 1892. Today, Isabella County's economy is primarily centered around education, healthcare, and tourism, with the popular Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort located nearby.
Fun Fact: In Isabella County, you can find the "Black and Gold United States Flag," a rare flag that was flown in 1864 during the re-election campaign of then-President Abraham Lincoln. It is believed to be one of the few remaining flags of its kind and is now located at the Isabella County Courthouse.
