Jackson County, Michigan
.Jackson County is located in the southern part of Michigan and was established on December 29, 1829. It was named in honor of President Andrew Jackson, who was serving as the seventh president of the United States at that time. The city of Jackson serves as the county seat.
Prior to its settlement by European-Americans, Jackson County was inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Potawatomi, Ottawa, and Ojibwe. The first European-American to visit the area was surveyor Alfred Edwards in 1818. The region began to attract more settlers, and in 1829, Horace Blackman, the "Father of Jackson," along with his brother-in-law Alexander Laverty and his nephew Peter B. Porter, arrived in the area and built a cabin on the banks of the Grand River.
Jackson County played a significant role in the formation of the Republican Party. During the 1850s, many anti-slavery groups emerged to counter the extension of slavery into the new western territories. On July 6, 1854, the first meeting of what would become the Republican Party was held in Jackson, Michigan, under the oaks park. In reference to this key historic event, Jackson would later be referred to as the birthplace of the Republican Party.
Throughout its history, Jackson County has developed as a hub for industry, agriculture, and transportation. The Michigan Central Railroad, which opened in 1841, linked the county with other major cities, facilitating trade and economic growth.
A fun fact about Jackson County is that it was home to the world's first state prison, which opened in 1839. This prison played a significant role in industrial development, as the prisoners were required to work in factories, contributing to the growth of various industries in southern Michigan. The prison later relocated and expanded, evolving into the current Southern Michigan Correctional Facility in Jackson.
