Keweenaw County is located in the Upper Peninsula of the great state of Michigan. Established in 1861, it is the northernmost county in Michigan and covers an area of approximately 5,966 square miles. The county was originally inhabited by the Ojibwa Native Americans before European explorers, missionaries, and fur traders arrived in the 17th century. The region was first explored by French missionaries in the mid-17th century, and copper mining developed after that.

The area gained prominence in the 19th century due to the discovery of valuable mineral resources, mainly copper. Keweenaw County became a center for copper mining, with the famous "Copper Rush" taking place between 1843 and 1880. The Keweenaw Copper mining industry was a significant contributor to both the local and national economy.

By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Keweenaw County's population boomed, attracting immigrants from various European countries to work in the mines. However, the decline in copper prices in the early 20th century led to the closure of many mines, causing a downturn in the local economy and a decrease in population.

Fun Fact: Keweenaw County is home to the Keweenaw National Historical Park, which was established in 1992 to preserve the area's rich copper mining history. The park offers visitors a chance to explore the stories of mining, technology, and culture, as well as enjoy the beautiful natural landscape of the region.
