Presque Isle County, Michigan
.Presque Isle County is located in the northeastern part of the Lower Peninsula in the great state of Michigan, USA. Established on April 1, 1840, the county's name originates from the French term "presqu'le," which means "almost an island." This name was chosen since the region features a prominent headland stretching into Lake Huron.
The first known inhabitants of the area were the Algonquian-speaking people, including the Ottawa and Ojibwa tribes. European settlers began to move into the region in the early 1800s; however, the population significantly increased with the Homestead Act of 1862, which incentivized people to move westward and cultivate the land.
Lumbering rapidly grew as a significant industry in the area during the latter half of the 19th century, thanks to the abundance of vast forests. The lumbering business prompted a boom in the number of sawmills, and timber extraction remained critical to the county's economy well into the 20th century. By the early 1900s, however, the depletion of forest resources forced many lumber camps to close, and the county's economy shifted towards agriculture, tourism, and limestone quarrying.
Today, Presque Isle County retains its prominence in the limestone industry, with its Calcite quarry in Rogers City being one of the largest limestone quarries in the world. Tourism is also important, as the area is home to beautiful lakes, stunning shorelines, and abundant recreational opportunities.
Fun fact: Two historic lighthouses, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places, can be found in Presque Isle County- the Old Presque Isle Lighthouse, built in 1840, and the New Presque Isle Lighthouse, built in 1870. These fascinating structures have attracted countless tourists over the years, offering a glimpse of maritime history in the Great Lakes region.
