Wexford County is located in the northwestern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The county was officially organized in 1869, and it was named after Wexford County in Ireland. It covers an area of approximately 576 square miles and has the city of Cadillac as its county seat.
Before European settlement, Native American tribes, such as the Ottawa and Ojibwe, inhabited the region.
