Michigan State Bug
Monarch

Although not the "official state insect", the Monarch butterfly is a common and well loved Michigan insect, is a vibrant orange and black butterfly with distinctive white markings. The Monarch butterfly is found throughout the United States, and is especially common in Michigan during the summer months. The Monarch butterfly is a major pollinator, and its presence is important for the preservation of many species of plants and flowers. Its migration pattern is impressive, as Monarchs have been known to fly up to 3,000 miles between their summer and winter homes. The Monarch has been the Michigan state insect since 1975, when it was proposed by a fifth grade class from Monroe Elementary School. The proposal was approved by the Michigan House of Representatives and signed into law by Governor William Milliken. The Monarch butterfly is a symbol of both conservation and beauty in the state of Michigan, and its preservation is important for the health of many natural ecosystems.
