Detroit is the largest and the most populous city in the state of Michigan, United States. It was founded in 1701 by French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, who named it Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit, after the nearby Detroit River.

The city grew rapidly in the 19th century, as it became a major industrial center for the production of cars, steel, and other goods. The Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and Chrysler are still headquartered in the city or nearby suburbs, making Detroit a major center of the American automotive industry.

Detroit is also known for its music, particularly its Motown sound from the 1960s and 1970s, which included artists like Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and the Jackson 5.

However, in the later part of the 20th century, industry and population began to decline, leading to financial and social problems. The city filed for bankruptcy in 2013, becoming the largest municipality in U.S. history to do so at that time.

Despite recent struggles, Detroit is still working to revitalize itself and has seen some economic growth in recent years. It is also known for its art and cultural offerings, like the Detroit Institute of Arts and the annual Detroit Jazz Festival.
