Hennepin County, located in the great state of Minnesota, is the most populous county in the state and was established in 1852. It is named in honor of the 17th-century explorer Father Louis Hennepin, a Belgian-born Franciscan missionary who was one of the first Europeans to explore the area. The county seat and largest city is Minneapolis, which along with the neighboring city of Saint Paul comprises the "Twin Cities" metropolitan area.
The region originally was inhabited by the Dakota Sioux Native American tribe. European settlement in the area began in the early 19th century, primarily by French fur traders and later American pioneers. The arrival of the railroad in the mid-19th century contributed to the growth of Minneapolis and other towns in Hennepin County. Flour mills, sawmills, and other industries along the Mississippi River drove the economic development of the area.
Fun fact: Hennepin County is home to the famous Mall of America, located in the city of Bloomington. Opening its doors in 1992, the Mall of America is one of the largest shopping malls in the United States, boasting more than 500 stores, multiple amusement parks, and an aquarium.
