Brooten is a small village with a population of approximately 700 people. It was incorporated in 1891 and named after a town in Norway. Historically, it was a major center for dairy farming and has been nicknamed the "Butter Capital of the Nation" due to its large number of dairy farms and creameries. Today, it features a charming downtown area with some small shops, restaurants, and parks. It is also home to Brooten Elementary School, a part of the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa School District.
