Barton County, Missouri

Barton County, located in the great state of Missouri, was established on December 12, 1855. It was named in honor of David Barton, the first U.S. Senator from Missouri who served from 1821 to 1831. The county is part of the larger Missouri Ozarks region, which is characterized by forested hills, rivers, and springs. The county seat in Barton is Lamar, which gained prominence as the birthplace of the 33rd U.S. President, Harry S. Truman.
In the mid-19th century, the area experienced a population boom as settlers moved westward, primarily due to the fertile soil and resources that made farming and general sustenance possible. Early European settlers were a mix of German, English, and Irish immigrants, and agriculture has been the backbone of Barton County's economy ever since.
