Carter County, Missouri

Carter County is located in the southeastern region of the great state of Missouri, USA. It was officially established on March 10, 1859, and named in honor of Zimri A. Carter, a pioneer settler who arrived in the area in 1812. The county's seat is Van Buren, which was founded in the same year as the county.
Initially, Carter County was a part of Ripley County and then later a part of Shannon County. Its creation during the antebellum period was influenced by the growing population in the region, which necessitated the division of land for easier administration. Much of the early settlement in Carter County was due to the plentiful timber resources, fertile land, and abundant water supply from the Current River. Logging, milling, and agriculture were some of the primary industries that attracted settlers.
Fun fact: The pristine Ozark National Scenic Riverways, which include portions of the Current River and Jacks Fork River, can be found within Carter County. Established in 1964, this was the first national park area in the United States to protect a river system, and it offers a diverse range of outdoor recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, hiking, and canoeing. The park's scenic beauty and rich biodiversity make it a popular tourist destination, contributing to the local economy of Carter County.
