Chariton County, located in the great state of Missouri, was officially established on November 16, 1820. Named after the Chariton River, which runs through the area, the county was one of the first five counties organized in Missouri. The county seat is Keytesville, named after the town's founder, James Keyte. Chariton County is a part of the region known as "Little Dixie," an area of Missouri heavily influenced by Southern culture, particularly from its early settlements in the 1800s.
The first settlers in Chariton County were mainly from the Upper South states, such as Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee, seeking fertile land for agriculture. Due to its location beside the Missouri River, Chariton County experienced significant growth throughout the 19th century. The region was characterized by large plantations and farming communities that played a crucial role in shaping its economic and cultural identity.
During the Civil War, the area witnessed numerous skirmishes and battles, as the Union forces and Confederate sympathizers fought over control of the strategically important Missouri River.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Chariton County experienced a boom in agriculture and transportation, with the construction of railroads aiding the local economy. By the mid-20th century, however, the county had experienced a population decline, mainly due to agricultural mechanization and migration towards urban areas.
Today, Chariton County continues to be a region rich in history, with numerous historical landmarks and attractions, such as the Battle of Marshall Civil War historical site near Malta Bend.
Fun Fact: Chariton County has a unique connection to three United States Presidents James K. Polk, Abraham Lincoln, and Ulysses S. Grant. All were intimately involved in lawsuits in Chariton County before they became Presidents, showcasing the significance of this Missouri region in national politics.
