Daviess County, Missouri

Daviess County, located in the great state of Missouri, was officially established on December 29, 1836. It was named in honor of Joseph Hamilton Daveiss, a distinguished lawyer from Kentucky who played a significant role in the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811. The county's spelling, however, differs from Daveiss' name due to a clerical error that occurred during the establishment process.
The region was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Sac and Fox tribes, before European settlers arrived in the early 19th century. One notable early resident was Mormon leader Lyman Wight, who settled in the area and established a small community called "Adam-ondi-Ahman" in 1838. The site holds historical significance for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
During the Civil War, Daviess County remained predominantly neutral, with residents holding divided loyalties between the Union and Confederate forces. After the conflict, the county experienced an economic boom due to the expansion of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific railroads. The county seat, Gallatin, played a crucial role in the agricultural and industrial development of the region.
A fun fact about Daviess County is that it is home to the "Squirrel Cage Jail" in Gallatin, built in 1889. This unique three-story rotating jail, officially known as the Daviess County Rotary Jail, was designed to improve safety and efficiency in managing inmates. Today, it operates as a museum and stands as a testament to the innovations of its time.
