Dent County is located in the southeastern region of the great state of Missouri. It was officially established on February 10, 1851, and was named in honor of Lewis Dent, the first representative to the Missouri State Legislature from the area. The county seat is in the city of Salem. Dent County is part of the Missouri Ozarks, a geographic region characterized by its scenic hills, caves, and rivers.

The history of Dent County is closely tied to the pioneer settlers who arrived in the area in the early 19th century. Many of these settlers were attracted to the region due to its natural resources, such as timber and freshwater springs. During its early years, Dent County's economy was primarily based on farming, hunting, and trapping. However, as the region continued to develop, other industries began to emerge, such as lead mining and timber processing.

During the Civil War, Dent County played a marginal role with both Union and Confederate forces operating in the area. The county was mainly a stage for minor skirmishes and bushwhacker activities. After the war, the county focused on recovering and rebuilding its infrastructure and industries.

A fun fact about Dent County is that it's home to Montauk State Park, which is located at the headwaters of the Current River. The park is well-known for its excellent trout fishing opportunities and attracts thousands of visitors each year. The park's scenic beauty also makes it a popular destination for camping, hiking, and picnicking, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Missouri Ozarks.
