Hickory County, located in the great state of Missouri, was officially established on February 14, 1845. It was named in honor of President Andrew Jackson, who was nicknamed "Old Hickory" for his toughness and resilience. The county is situated in the southwestern region of the state, covering an area of approximately 399 square miles.

Hickory County is characterized by its picturesque landscapes, featuring rolling hills, fertile farmland, and the beautiful Pomme de Terre River running through it. The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Osage and Kickapoo. European-American settlers began arriving in the region in the early 1800s, mainly from Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia.

Throughout its history, agriculture has played a significant role in the economy, with various crops such as corn, wheat, and hay being produced in the area. Additionally, the county has always maintained strong ties to its rural roots and continues to celebrate its agricultural heritage.

One fun fact about Hickory County is that it is home to the Pomme de Terre State Park, which offers a wide array of outdoor recreational activities. The park covers over 700 acres of land and has two marinas, making it a popular destination for camping, fishing, boating, and swimming. The name "Pomme de Terre" means "apple of the earth" or "earth apple" in French, referring to the potato-like tubers that were historically found along the riverbanks in the area.
