Howell County is located in the southern part of the great state of Missouri. The county was officially established on March 2, 1857 and named in honor of Josiah Howell, a pioneer settler who played a significant role in the creation of the county. It covers an area of 928 square miles, with its county seat in West Plains, the largest city in the county.

The region was initially inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Osage, who were then displaced by European settlers in the early 19th century. Settlers were primarily attracted to the county due to its fertile soil, ideal for farming and agriculture. The Old Ozarks Trail, one of the earliest trails used by travelers in search of settling lands, crossed through Howell County, further contributing to the area's growth.

During the American Civil War, Howell County experienced conflict and divisions among its residents, as it was a border state with citizens supporting both the Union and Confederate sides. Many skirmishes and battles took place in and around the county.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the development of the railroad system fostered the growth of industry in Howell County, particularly timber, agriculture, and commerce. Commerce flourished.
Over time, the economy diversified to include a variety of industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, education, and tourism.
