Iron County, Missouri

Iron County is a small yet historically rich area in the great state of Missouri. It was officially established on February 17, 1857, and the name "Iron County" was derived from its vast iron ore deposits that attracted settlers and investors to the region. The county seat is the city of Ironton.
The area that is now Iron County was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Osage and Missouri. European settlers, primarily French and American, began to move into the region during the 18th and 19th centuries. The iron ore industry took off in the county during the mid-19th century, with the founding of iron mines and smelting businesses like the Iron Mountain, Pilot Knob, and Shepherd Mountain operations. The iron industry continued to grow until the early 20th century when the iron ore became depleted.
During the American Civil War, Iron County played a significant role. In 1861, Missouri's Governor Claiborne Fox Jackson established a pro-Confederate militia camp in the county, known as "Camp Jackson," near the present-day city of Ironton. The Union Army then established Fort Davidson in Pilot Knob near the Iron Mountain Railroad. The Confederate forces, led by General Sterling Price, attacked the fort in September 1864 in a major battle known as the Battle of Pilot Knob. The Union forces were ultimately victorious, hindering the Confederate advancement towards St. Louis.
Today, Iron County is known for its beautiful outdoor recreation activities, including the Mark Twain National Forest, Ozark Trail, and the picturesque Taum Sauk Mountain State Park.
Fun fact: Taum Sauk Mountain, located in Iron County, is the highest natural point in Missouri, standing at 1,772 feet above sea level. It offers breathtaking views and attracts tourists and hikers alike on the popular Mina Sauk Falls Trail.
