Jackson County, Missouri
.Jackson County, located in the western part of the great state of Missouri, has a rich historical background. Established on December 15, 1826, it was named in honor of President Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States. The county played a significant role in the expansion of the United States westward, as it encompassed key parts of the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails, which pioneers used to navigate through the rugged terrain during the 19th century.
Kansas City, the largest city in Jackson County, was founded in the 1830s as a river port, and its location on the Missouri River made it an essential trade hub. Independence, the county seat, was also an essential starting point for thousands of settlers heading westward on the California, Oregon, and Santa Fe Trails. The region saw a considerable boost to its economy during the California Gold Rush (1848-1855), as it catered to the needs of travelers.
In the years leading up to the American Civil War, tension was high in Jackson County due to the debate over slavery. Missouri was a slave state, and conflicts arose with nearby Kansas, which was a free state. The county played host to several Civil War battles and skirmishes between the Union and the Confederacy.
Fun Fact about Jackson County: Harry S. Truman, the 33rd President of the United States, was born in Lamar, Missouri, but he spent a significant part of his life in Jackson County. In particular, Truman's home in the city of Independence, now a National Historic Site, was known as the "Summer White House" during his presidency. He returned to the residence after leaving office and is now buried in the grounds of the Truman Library, also located in Independence.
