Madison County is located in the southeastern region of the great state of Missouri. Established on December 14, 1818, it was named after James Madison, the fourth President of the United States, who played a major role in drafting and promoting the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. The county seat is Fredericktown, which was founded in 1819 by George Frederick Bollinger.

In the early 18th century, the region was inhabited primarily by Native Americans, specifically the Osage tribe. White settlers began arriving in Madison County in the late 1700s and early 1800s from the eastern parts of the United States. These settlers were attracted to the natural resources of the region, particularly the abundant forests and waterways.

One of the main industries in the early years of Madison County history was mining. In fact, Missouri's first lead mine, Mine La Motte, was established in the county in 1720 by a French explorer named Sieur Antoine Laumet de La Mothe. The mine provided lead for bullets during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. The rich mineral resources in Madison County gave rise to numerous other mines and helped to create a thriving mining industry in the area.

An interesting fact about Madison County is that the Fredericktown courthouse has one of the few remaining Victorian-era cast iron courthouse fences in the state of Missouri. This ornate and intricate fence is a unique historic feature of the area.

Madison County is home to several parks and natural landmarks that offer visitors plenty of outdoor recreational activities. The county's beautiful landscapes have helped to forge a strong sense of community pride and a deep appreciation for its cultural heritage.
