Newton County is located in the southwestern region of the great state of Missouri. Established in December 31, 1838, the county is named in honor of John Newton, a soldier who fought during the Revolutionary War. With an area of approximately 627 square miles, the county is part of the Joplin, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The Osage Native American tribe originally inhabited the region before European settlers arrived, attracted by fertile land, abundant water resources, and valuable mineral deposits. Agriculture and mining (especially lead and zinc) played crucial roles in the development of the region.
The county seat, Neosho, was designated as such in 1839 and is nicknamed the "Flower Box City" due to its beautiful flower plantings in over 600 public flower boxes. Neosho is also referred to as the "Gateway to the Ozarks," given its location at the western edge of the Ozark Plateau.
One fun fact about Newton County is that it boasts one of the world's largest natural springs by volume, named the Big Spring. The water from this spring is so plentiful that it forms its own stream, which eventually feeds into Shoal Creek. This natural wonder can be visited at Neosho's Big Spring Park, a popular spot for both locals and visitors.
