Pettis County, Missouri

Pettis County is located in the western-central region of the great state of Missouri. Established in January 26, 1833, the county was named in honor of Spencer Darwin Pettis, a former U.S. Congressman from Missouri who died in a duel in 1831. The county seat is Sedalia, founded in 1860 as a railroad town when the Pacific Railroad established a railhead there.
Pettis County's history is shaped by its connection to the railroad industry, with several rail lines crossing the county, including the Missouri Pacific, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (also known as the Katy), and the Rock Island Line. This made Sedalia a hub for rail transportation in the 19th and early 20th centuries, playing a key role in the region's growth and development.
Agriculture has also been a significant aspect of Pettis County's history, with fertile lands supporting the growth of crops such as corn, wheat, and oats, as well as livestock farming. This agricultural heritage is celebrated at the Missouri State Fair, held annually in Sedalia since 1901, which showcases the state's agricultural achievements and local culture.
Fun Fact: Pettis County is home to the Bothwell Lodge State Historic Site, which features a 12,000-square-foot, 31-room mansion built by prominent Sedalia lawyer and businessman John Homer Bothwell between 1897 and 1929. This stunning structure, perched atop a 120-foot bluff, pays tribute to early 20th-century craftsmanship and provides an insight into the lifestyle of a wealthy Missourian during that period.
