Pike County, Missouri

Pike County, Missouri, was established on December 14, 1818, and named after the explorer and army officer, Zebulon M. Pike. It is located in northeastern Missouri, along the Mississippi River. Known for its fertile land, Pike County has been a significant agricultural region right from the early days. Louisiana serves as the county seat, and it is the third-oldest settlement on the Mississippi River in Missouri.
The earliest settlers in Pike County were Europeans from Kentucky, Virginia, and the Carolinas. The primary exports during the early years were tobacco and hemp. The county played a crucial role in the transportation of goods, as steamboats operating on the Mississippi River were frequent during the 19th century. The completion of the North Missouri Railroad in 1857 only added to the importance of the transportation sector in the county.
During the American Civil War, Pike County was fortunate enough to avoid most major battles, but there were some guerilla skirmishes in the region. With the end of the war, population growth continued, and the county became known as "The Land of Lincoln and Mark Twain" as both U.S. President Abraham Lincoln and the famous author Samuel Clemens (a.k.a. Mark Twain) had connections to the area.
One fun fact about Pike County is that it is known as the "Home of Missouri's Twin Cities" because two of its largest towns, Louisiana and Bowling Green, are of almost equal size and located only 10 miles apart. Additionally, Louisiana, the county seat, is known for its historical district and beautiful Victorian homes, attracting tourists from across the country.
