Pulaski County, Missouri

Pulaski County, located in the great state of Missouri, was officially created on January 19, 1833. The county was named in honor of Count Casimir Pulaski, a Polish nobleman who became an American Revolutionary War hero for his valor and accomplishments as a young cavalry officer. The county seat, Waynesville, is named after Revolutionary War General "Mad" Anthony Wayne.
In the early 19th century, settlers were attracted to Pulaski County by its natural beauty, location near the Gasconade River, and the rich timber and abundant wildlife available in the area. The Old Wire Road, which followed a telegraph line built through the county, later served as the main stagecoach route between St. Louis and Springfield, Missouri.
During the Civil War, Pulaski County found itself divided, with many residents supporting both Union and Confederate causes. Consequently, the area experienced numerous skirmishes and tragic consequences from the war.
In the early 20th century, the railroad arrived in the county which not only provided transportation but also facilitated economic growth. Then in the 1940s, the establishment of Fort Leonard Wood had a significant impact on the region, catalyzing population growth and economic development.
A fun fact about Pulaski County is that it is home to several "roadside giants," which are whimsical, oversized sculptures scattered throughout the county. These iconic sculptures include an 8-foot shamrock at Buckhorn, a 15-foot rocking chair in Waynesville, and a giant frog named W.H. Croaker in St. Robert. These attractions make Pulaski County a truly unique and memorable destination for visitors.
