Putnam County, Missouri

Putnam County is located in the northern region of the great state of Missouri. It was officially established on February 28, 1845, and named in honor of Major General Israel Putnam, a renowned war hero of the American Revolutionary War. The county was created from sections of the previously existing Adair and Sullivan Counties.
The county seat, Unionville, was initially called Harmony but was later renamed in 1855. Agriculture has traditionally played a significant role in the economy of Putnam County, with crop and livestock production being its mainstays.
One fun fact about Putnam County is that it was once home to the "World's Largest Producing Coal Shaft" in the late 1800s in operation under the Putnam County Coal Co. This coal shaft was named No. 1 Shaft and helped the region become an important coal producer in Missouri for a short period.
